Categories of J-1 Exchange Visitors
The J-1 Exchange Visitor program is appropriate for visitors to CSM who will temporarily perform research, lecture, teach, and/or collaborate with CSM faculty. There are different categories within the J-1 Program. J-1s at CSM can be granted one of the following J-1 categories:
Research Scholar: This J-1 category is for visitors whose purpose is to primarily conduct research, observe, or consult. Teaching is also allowed, but should not be the primary focus of activity. Examples of positions that utilize the J-1 are Post-Doc Researchers, Visiting Lecturer, Visiting Scholar, Research Associates and Research Fellows. The duration of visits for Research Scholars range from 3 weeks to 5 years.
Professor: This J-1 category is for visitors whose purpose is to primarily teach classes. Research, observation and consulting are allowed, but would not be the primary focus of activity. Visiting Lecturer or Visiting Scholar are appropriate titles for this category. The duration of visits for Professors ranges from 3 weeks to 5 years. Tenure-Track positions are not acceptable in J-1 status.
Short-Term Scholar: This J-1 category is limited to a 6 month stay. Appropriate for visitors who will teach, research or consult. The duration of visits for Short-Term Scholars ranges from 1 day to 6 months. Extensions of the stay beyond 6 months are prohibited.
